Clover vs Square vs Lightspeed POS

These three are built for different businesses, not different budgets. And whichever you pick, what it connects to decides whether it is a till or the centre of your operation.

The short answer
New, low volume, need it todaySquare. Free software, consumer hardware, running in an afternoon.
Busy restaurant or counter serviceClover. Purpose-built hardware — handhelds, kitchen display, customer-facing screens.
Inventory-heavy retailLightspeed for catalogue depth — or Clover plus a custom inventory layer where the fit is closer.
Multi-site or mixed channelsIntegration decides it. A POS wired into e-commerce, accounting and CRM beats a better standalone till.
Where we stand

Telebridge supplies Clover hardware through Paystone, and builds the software that connects it to everything else you run. We do not sell Square or Lightspeed. Below is where each of them fits — and what choosing it costs you.

What we deployCloverPaystoneTelebridge

The thing most comparisons miss

Your POS and your payment processing are two decisions, and some platforms deliberately fuse them. Square processes its own payments — you cannot bring your own. Clover is sold through resellers, so your rate depends on who you buy from. Lightspeed offers its own processing with alternatives on higher tiers.

Ask any POS vendor one question: can I change processor without replacing this hardware? The answer tells you how much leverage you keep — and how much of your data you will ever get back out.

Positioning reflects published vendor documentation and Canadian market reporting as of July 2026. Clover hardware is manufactured by Fiserv and sold through banks and resellers, so pricing and contract terms vary significantly by who you buy from.

Where the alternatives fit — and what they cost you

SquareSquare

When it’s the right call

Speed to launch and cost of entry. Genuinely usable free software, no monthly commitment on the base plan, hardware off the shelf. For a new café or a mobile service, it is the sensible answer.

What you give up

Consumer-grade hardware in a demanding kitchen, flat-rate processing that gets expensive with volume, and processing you cannot move without replacing the system. The larger cost is that it is a closed box — connecting it to accounting, e-commerce or CRM means middleware or manual exports, which is exactly the work that does not scale.

LightspeedLightspeed

When it’s the right call

Deep inventory. Hundreds or thousands of SKUs with variants, serial numbers, purchase orders and vendor management. Canadian company, Canadian support, strong for specialty retail.

What you give up

The most expensive monthly, a steeper learning curve, and considerable capability wasted on a single-site business with a small catalogue. And depth in one area is not integration: connecting it to the rest of your operation is still a project someone has to own.

Where Clover genuinely wins

Hardware built for a working floor: the Flex handheld for tableside, Mini for counter, Station Duo with a customer-facing display, kitchen display integration. Purpose-built equipment rather than a tablet in a stand. And because it is sold through resellers, you can get interchange-plus pricing rather than a fixed flat rate — which at real volume is where the money is.

The honest caveat is the flip side: a Clover deal is only as good as who sold it to you. Compare reseller offers and ask for the markup as a separate number — including ours.

The part no vendor sells you

What we build around your POS.

A till records sales. A connected POS runs the business. This is the work that turns one into the other — written in-house and shaped to how you actually trade.

01
POS, online store and accounting in one loop

Stock, sales and settlements moving between systems automatically. One source of truth instead of three that disagree by Friday.

02
Menus and catalogues migrated properly

Modifiers, variants, combos, pricing tiers and tax rules rebuilt correctly — the unglamorous work that decides whether a rollout goes smoothly.

03
Reporting across every location

A consolidated view of covers, sales, labour and product mix across sites, built to the numbers you actually manage against.

04
Loyalty and gift cards wired into your CRM

Member behaviour landing where marketing can use it, so a loyalty programme drives repeat visits instead of just issuing balances.

05
Workflow automation around the floor

Low-stock alerts, automatic purchase orders, end-of-day summaries, staff scheduling triggers — the manual chores between systems, automated.

06
Custom apps where the platform stops

When the workflow that defines your business is not in anyone’s product roadmap, we build it and connect it to the POS.

This is why the platform choice matters less than most comparisons suggest. Get the hardware right for your floor, then build the operation around it.

Choosing without regret

  1. Start from your floor. Table service, counter, or shelves — each implies different hardware.
  2. Count your SKUs. Past a few hundred with variants, inventory depth matters more.
  3. Separate POS from processing. Ask whether you can change processor later.
  4. List what it must connect to — e-commerce, accounting, CRM, payroll. Then ask who builds those connections.
  5. Price it over three years, including hardware, software and processing at your real volume.
  6. Ask who answers on a Saturday night. The honest answer varies enormously.

FAQ

With Square, no — processing is built in. With Clover it depends how the device was supplied. With Lightspeed, alternatives are supported on higher tiers. Ask before you buy, not after.

Yes — that is the core of what our development team does. Accounting, e-commerce, booking, inventory, CRM and payroll are the usual ones. If an off-the-shelf connector exists we use it; where one does not, we build it.

It depends on volume and reseller. At low volume Square is usually cheaper overall. At meaningful in-person volume, Clover on interchange-plus generally costs less — and the integration layer is usually worth more than either difference.

Both are credible restaurant systems worth quoting if you are food-service. We have focused on the three we are asked about most.

More than switching processor, less than most fear. The work is catalogue migration and staff training — which is precisely the part we do rather than hand you. Plan it outside your peak season and run a parallel period.
